The supplanted touch: Wearable design
2022
If we are surrounding ourselves more and more with technology, will there be a lack of human physical touch in the future? Do we need an extra technological organ that can replace human physical touch?
When someone holds or hugs you, the brain releases a chemical, oxytocin, that creates calmness within your body. Studies show that this chemical is also released in the brain when temporary pressure is applied to the body. The wearable gadget, represents an additional working ‘technological organ’ that is attached to the body. This organ gives temporary pressure on the back through air pressure. This organ expands and deflates through an air pump. This ‘organ’ is a substitute for physical touch.
